September 18, 2010 - International Observe the Moon Night

Building on last year's excitement of National Observe the Moon Night following the LCROSS impact on the lunar surface for the search for water, Astronomers Without Borders is holding the international event called International Observe the Moon Night on September 18, 2010. The idea is to share the excitement of lunar exploration. Since that is also an objective of the Moon Society here in India, we thought we should also participate in the event.

Here are some of the things that you can do:

Hold a public star party and give others a close-up look at our closest celestial neighbor
Hold a public lecture or give a public presentation
Contact a school near you and give a special presentation to classes
Hold an online events like a Tweetup

The Moon Society would like to help you by updating you on the latest happenings in the Indian Lunar mission - Chandrayaan and generally about plans of the exploration of the Moon. If you are participating, do let us know using the contact information on the sidebar.

MoonZoo and Moonbots

There are some very cool opportunities available to participate in lunar exploration and development today. Below, I present to you two such opportunities:

Moonbots (Last Date for Registration: May 15, 2010)

Moonbots is a multi-stage competition for students as young as 9 years old. The competition is open to an international audience and does not strictly require a school group. You can also be a group of neighbours, boy scouts, go to same classes etc. But, the competition does require at least one person for adult supervision. The competition expects participants to complete the challenges of the Google Lunar X Prize using Legos.

The programme is a joint venture of Google Lunar X Prize and Lego. Please do visit the Moonbots website to learn more and participate!

MoonZoo

The Lunar Reconnaisance Orbiter (LRO) has sent several high quality images back to Earth. Some of this data was recently released to the NASA's Planetary Database System. MoonZoo picks up data from the Lunar Reconnaisance Orbiter Camera (LROC) and encourages everyone to help Lunar Science!

Please do go through the amazing tutorial section and then get started either in the Crater Survey or Boulder Wars section. They have put images that humans can work on better than computers and are using human power to explore the lunar surface.

Some Moon Society, India members have already started participating!

SEDS India National Conference 2010

The Moon Society supported the Luna Trex event in the SEDS India National Conference 2010, that was held at the Vellore Institute of Technology University on April 10-11, 2010. While we wait for the formal event reports which will be posted here, please browse through these pictures.

Moon Miners Manifesto India Quarterly edition out

A Moon Books Drive

Moon Society India’s first project is to build a Lunar Resource Library of books that could be loaned out to members and/or chapters in India.

A good list of the some of the books in print that would be most welcome, is maintained by NSS/Moon Society member Ken Murphy at Ken's Lunar Library.

We are asking Moon Society members in the U.S. and elsewhere outside India, and NSS chapters that share Moon Miners’ Manifesto, to gather those books on this list that they or their members are willing to donate.

If you are a member of a chapter, gather all the books available from your fellow chapter members and send them to the Moon Society’s Milwaukee P.O. Box 80395, Milwaukee, WI 53208.

Or if you will be attending the International Space Development Conference in Chicago, May 27-31st, bring them with you to leave with Moon Society personnel (look of anyone tending the Moon Society exhibits in the ISDC Exhibit Hall. This will reduce collection shipping costs!

If you are neither connected to a chapter and/or won’t be attending ISDC 2010, just send them to the above PO Box.

Posters in good condition are also welcome. I have about 500 Artemis Project Posters in Milwaukee. But those are reserved for new members joining the Moon Society.

Collected books and posters will then be shipped to India by the least expensive method available. In India, the library will be kept either in Mumbai (Bombay) and in Chennai (Madras).

The Moon Society (International) and Moon Society India thank you in advance for your generosity. This is an open-ended effort, with no end-of-effort deadline. But, of course, we are anxious to get this project launched with a bang! So look now through your library. Those books you refer to regularly and prefer to keep for your own use, please do so. Those you can spare will be most welcome, however.

As we begin to acquire multiple copies, additional lunar libraries will be set up in other major Indian cities such as Delhi, Banglore, Hyderabad, Pune, Kolkata, etc. (Pune and Kolkata have NSS chapters that may want to participate)

Moon Society, India opening: A Report

On Saturday, November 14, 2009, Moon Society Secretary Pradeep Mohandas was present at the Nehru Planetarium's Hall of Quest at the launch of aerospace journalist, Srinivas Laxman's book, Moonshot India. At the occassion, the Secretary announced the formation of the Moon Society chapter in India.

Moon Society, India would like to thank the Nehru Planetarium for providing the platform to make our announcement and to Navneet Publications (who have published the book Moonshot India) for allowing us to make the announcement at the book launch.

We would like to thank everyone who joined us there for what was a momentous occassion for us!

Moon Society, India Opening - November 14, 2009

On November 14, 2009, Srinivas Laxman is launching his book, Moonshot India in Mumbai in the Hall of Quest at the Nehru Planetarium. He has agreed to allow us to make the announcement of the formation of Moon Society's India chapter on this occasion.
